Bookkeeping
Which software do you work in?
QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop and Xero. If you use something else, call us and we will tell you whether we can work in it.
What does monthly bookkeeping cost?
The fee is set by the work your books take — how many accounts and transactions, and the state they are in today. You get a written quote before we start, and your first conversation is free.
Are the monthly reports audited?
No. They are bookkeeping reports prepared from your books. We do not provide audits, reviews or compilations.
Can you catch up books that are behind?
Yes. We bring the books current first, month by month, and then keep them current.
Do I need to come to the office?
No. Bookkeeping clients work with us online: your software, the client portal for statements, and phone or video when it helps.
Payroll
Which payroll filings does an Ohio employer make?
Federal withholding and Form 941 each quarter, Form 940 for federal unemployment, Ohio withholding returns and the annual reconciliation with the W-2s, Ohio unemployment reports, and city withholding returns — plus school district withholding for employees who give you their district number. We keep that calendar for you.
What does payroll cost?
The fee is set by the work: how many employees, how often you pay, and how many states and cities are involved. You get a written quote before we start, and your first conversation is free.
Do you prepare 1099s for contractors?
Yes. We prepare and file the 1099s for the people you paid as contractors, and send each one their copy.
Can you take over payroll partway through the year?
Yes. We bring in the year-to-date figures so the quarterly returns and the W-2s are complete for the whole year.
Tax returns and notices
What does it cost to have my return prepared?
Each fee is set by the work your return takes — the forms, the entities, the state of your records. We give you a written quote before we start any work, so there are no surprises when the bill comes. Your first conversation is free.
Can you prepare my return if I live outside Ohio?
Yes. Clients anywhere in the United States work with us entirely online: documents through the portal, questions by phone or video, signing with an identity check, and the return e-filed. State returns are prepared for every state you need.
What should I bring?
Last year’s return if we did not prepare it, every W-2, 1099 and 1098 you received, a photo ID, and anything new this year — a home, a business, a child, a move. Once you are a client, the portal shows a checklist of what we still need.
Who reviews my return?
Every return is prepared by one person and reviewed by a second before you see it. You can call either of them with questions.
How do I sign my return?
In person on the office iPad, or online with an identity check — your choice. Nothing is filed until you sign.
I received a letter from the IRS. What should I do?
Do not ignore it, and do not pay or call a number in it until you know what it asks for. Send us a copy through the portal or bring it in. We read it, tell you what it means and when the reply is due, and can answer it for you.
Tax planning
What is the Strategic Tax Blueprint?
It is our tax planning service: we look at your year before it ends, estimate the tax, talk through the choices the law allows, and give you a written plan with the dates that matter.
When is the best time to plan?
Before the year ends, while choices are still open. Many choices close on December 31; a few, such as some retirement contributions, stay open until the return is due.
Do you promise a lower tax bill?
No. Every situation is different, and some years there is little to change. We show you what the law allows and what each choice would take, and you decide.
What does tax planning cost?
The fee is set by the work your situation takes. You get a written quote before we start, and your first conversation is free.
Visiting and working online
When is the office open?
Monday–Friday, 8 AM–4 PM. You can upload documents to the portal at any time.
Where do I park?
Park in our lot, between the office and the church, and come in the side glass door.
Which areas do you serve in person?
Coshocton County and the surrounding counties — Holmes, Knox, Licking, Muskingum and Tuscarawas. Clients farther away work with us online, with the same people, the same review and the same phone number.
Farms
Do farmers pay estimated tax like everyone else?
Not always. The IRS has a special rule for farmers: if at least two-thirds of your gross income is from farming, you can make one estimated payment by January 15, or skip it and file your return and pay in full by March 1. IRS Publication 225, the Farmer’s Tax Guide, explains the rule.
Can you keep the farm’s books too?
Yes. We keep books in QuickBooks or Xero monthly, or bring them current at year-end, so the farm return starts from records that tie out.
Do you work with farms outside Coshocton County?
Yes. We work in person with clients across Coshocton County and the surrounding counties — Holmes, Knox, Licking, Muskingum and Tuscarawas, and online with clients farther away.
Individuals and families
Do I have to file an Ohio school district return?
You file one if you lived in an Ohio school district that levies an income tax for any part of the year. The Ohio Department of Taxation’s address lookup tells you your district and whether it levies the tax.
Do I owe city income tax where I live or where I work?
Often both: Ohio cities tax wages earned in the city, and many also tax their residents, with a credit for tax paid to the city where you work. Each city sets its own rate and credit.
When will I get my refund?
The IRS and Ohio each show your refund’s status on their own websites. Our refund status page links to both.
Moved out of Ohio
Do I file an Ohio return the year I move away?
Generally yes: a part-year resident files the Ohio IT 1040 and reports the whole year’s income, and Ohio gives a credit for the income earned while you lived elsewhere. The Ohio Department of Taxation’s instructions for the IT 1040 explain how.
Can you prepare my new state’s return?
Yes. We prepare returns for every state where you need to file, alongside your federal and Ohio returns.
Nonprofits
When is a nonprofit’s 990 due?
By the 15th day of the fifth month after the organization’s year ends — May 15 for a calendar year. An extension on Form 8868 gives six more months.
Which 990 does our organization file?
It depends on the organization’s gross receipts and total assets: the 990-N e-postcard, the 990-EZ or the full 990. Churches are generally not required to file one. The IRS’s instructions for Form 990 set out the tests, and we can tell you which applies.
Do you audit nonprofits?
No. We do not provide audits, reviews or compilations. If a grant or your bylaws require an audit, an audit firm does that work.
Small businesses and trades
When is a business return due?
For a calendar-year partnership or S corporation, March 15; for a sole proprietor, with your own return in April. An extension gives more time to file, not to pay.
Can one firm do the business return and my own return?
Yes, and it helps: the K-1 from the business flows straight into your own return, prepared in the same office.
Do you work with businesses outside Ohio?
Yes. Businesses anywhere in the United States work with us online, with returns for every state where they file.
